What a Night November 4th Was
What a night November 4th was...amazing. After 30 years of analyzing, coaching, and writing about global leaders, we finally have a leader – Barack Obama - who appears to come close to a match for "Leadership from the Inside Out."
Over the past few months of the campaign, my colleague and I, Ken Brousseau, have analyzed Obama and McCain, using our leadership models. We've been published in the Washington Post and interviewed on National Public Radio and FOX about their strengths and weaknesses. During this time, we disciplined ourselves to be objective, not giving any indication of what we personally thought was the best choice. Now, on the other side of a momentous election, we can be more direct in expressing what Obama's leadership characteristics represent.
We are extremely fortunate to have chosen so well. In addition to having what feels like a new slate and the positive momentum that has come with a sense of hope, opportunity and possibilities, we have a new President with an unsual combination of qualities: astounding intelligence and Mental Agility; high Emotional Intelligence; extraordinary Learning Agility; and authentic Multi-Cultural Intelligence. This combination is rare indeed. Why did this happen? Why did America make this choice? Why has America woken up, opened up, and changed? Through the inspiration and example of Barack Obama, America has reconnected with its ideals. As a result, America was rewarded with the best of the best. As we sense from the rhetoric, the actions, and the outcome of the 2008 Presidential election, when we open up to more possibilities, more possibilities come to us.
I rarely reveal personal feelings on political matters, but I am very proud of our country today. Very proud of our new President and proud¬, as well as privileged and eager—for the first time in my adult life—to be both a follower and co-creator with our new President.
Will Obama make mistakes? Certainly. Will he stumble under the multi-dimensional pressures? Probably. Even so, we have chosen well and have a President who will lead WITH US, connect WITH US, and in this complex, challenging time, place the "World First."
